Is Video Games Really Bad For People?

These days in class, we are discussing whether or not video games is a harmful thing for people, especially for young adults and children. Most people will argue that video games such as those contain violence, are becoming increasingly popular in young age children. Playing violent games may be associated with a tendency to behave more aggressively. Children who played a violent video game displayed a higher level of aggression than children who played a nonviolent game. However, it should not be believed such simply because these children shows more aggressive thoughts does not mean that they were more likely to behave in a violent manner. Although majority people (most of them are parents, teachers and educators) advocate the position that video games cause violent behavior in children and adults, there are also many supporters who support the opposite belief.

Other negative effects of video games may include taking time away from a child's studies or homework and decreased social skills. But video games is not as bad as people think that will influence students’ life. Researchers from University of Michigan found that game players and no-game players spent the same time period with their parents and friends. The more time boys and girls gamers spent on playing video games with friends, the same time they spent on the other activities. Despite possible detrimental effects of excessive video game playing, there are educational benefits to playing video games in moderation. Our society cannot just believe video games is not good for people. We should see the both sides of this modern society’s production.

My experience of writing my research paper

This is my first time to write a real research paper in my life. It is interesting that my first paper was not written in my first language, but using English. Like the book project few weeks before, we also have to read a lot of materials as well. If the book project was a challenging for me, this time the paper is a more challenging work for all of us. Because we are not native speakers, reading academic papers, journals and other professional materials sometimes will confuse us. For me, when I read what I found in the library or from the internet, sometimes, some professional words and expressions made me have no sense. Although I will study finance in Concordia, and I have some knowledge about it, I still cannot know some explanations when I read the book A Cost-Benefits Analysis. I really worried about my paper at the beginning. In the end, however, I finally found that these professional papers were not as hard as I thought before. I learned how to explain a thing well from some papers and how to paraphrasing articles as well. I also got great help from Marley and Scott and I learned how to write a real reference list in English by reading Lipson’s book.

Actually, I didn’t satisfy my paper and my presentation after I did them. I didn’t do my best because my body’s problem. I believed that I can do better next time if I fell better than those passing weeks. In the passing few weeks, I think I improved my speaking skill because when I did my presentation, I wasn’t so nervous as I did before. But the practicing time is too short, therefore, I forgot some important parts and some linking words when I presented. I hope next time, I can do a better job than this time.

Find the Truth---Déja Dead

When the first time I heard the name Déjà Dead, I really wanted to know what was the French world meaning. After few days reading, I guessed that my poor French language knowledge could not help me to find the answer. But this book really intrigued me into reading it. At the first time, I didn’t find what a good book it was. The writer, Kathy Reichs is a forensic anthropologist. She not only performances perfect in her job, but also wrote an excellent book for people.

The story had happened in Montreal 15 years ago in downtown area. When the first died body was founded, the main characteristic Temperance Brennan believed that it was not a simple case. Few weeks later, police officers found another four bodies. Dr. Brennan realized that these were not isolated deaths and if she wanted police officers to find this brutal murderer. With the final truth was discovered day by day, Tempe also got deep in dangerous. Because the background of this story was located in Montreal, every time when I read it at midnight, I really scared. The feeling was like the murderer could suddenly occur in my home. Actually it was a foolish idea but the writer showed us how well she could write a novel. When I read the book, I cannot believe it was written by an unprofessional writer, a forensic anthropologist.

From my eyes, it is really a good mystery book. The used her professional knowledge introduced us how a forensic anthropologist works and explained some details how her character goes about determining the age, sex and cause of death when she had only bones to work with, that really makes me feel great

Gender or Cross-Culture

Many people will have this kind of feeling that sometimes they are unable to talk to their life partners. Both genders are hard to understand each others, but whether different countries people can misunderstand the others when they have a talk?

I think that the key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and making a conscious effort to overcome these problems. Second, it is important to assume that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and adjust one’s behavior appropriately. For example, one should always assume that there is a significant possibility that cultural differences are causing communication problems, and be willing to be patient and forgiving, rather than hostile and aggressive, if problems develop. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.

My Country's Population Situation

Although China has had its one child police for quite a long time, it still faces much pressure in the field of population. The one child police have benefited the whole nations these years, and more couples prefer to have their babies older than before. However, Chinese people will up to more than 1.3 billion in the year 2010 and 1.4 billion in 2020. The largest population amount will happen in 2033, at that time, China will have 1.5 billion people.

High population density leads to many problems in China. The first one is energy short supply. These years in the south part of China, electricity short supply infect most cities like Shanghai. High temperature in summer time requires more air conditionings, therefore, sometimes in big cities of China, electricity will be cut off for an hour or more. People can not stand in such a hot weather.

Another problem is pollution, which includes air pollution, light pollution. In Beijing, there are more than 16 million people in urban area. Government suggests people to use public transportation, however, Beijing still had 3 million automobiles in 2007 and this number is still increasing. Such lots of cars produce millions tons of gas, and the consequence of this is people can hardly see blue sky in downtown area. In addition, more and more skyscrapers are built in big cities and the glasses have to be used as the glass wall. These glasses can reflect sunlight; it is a real damage for people’s eyes.

China’s population problem confuses the whole nation many years. But Chinese people can know how to survival and can find solutions for such a problem

Language Learning, My Experience

Language as an important tool has showed its function in many different areas. Many years ago, when the first time I learned English, I found that it was really an interesting thing. With the time going, however, I realized that language learning was not as simple as I thought before. It requires me to be a quite patient person and a hard working guy.

When I went to high school, I had a good opportunity to learn English, but unfortunately, I didn’t use such an opportunity efficiently. In China, English learning in secondary school is very important. Each school must have English course and English is one of the three main courses in secondary school, the other two are Chinese and Mathematic. At the beginning time, I was really happy that I had learned a lot before I become a secondary student and got a good score in an important exam. Therefore, obviously, I silly believed that I could learn English as easily as I want. Thus, I didn’t go over any more before exams. I became a lazy boy, and things were going backwards day by day. I told myself everything was under control, the truth was, and however, my English ability got the lowest level at that time.

Not only my parents gave me great support, but also my teachers helped me a lot when my English learning way had some barriers. Before I came to Canada, I talked to one of my friend who is also my foreign English teacher in China. He suggested that I should study in a language school before I became a university student. I didn’t know why he suggests so, but I trust him. I told to my parents, they all thought it was really a good suggestion. After I coming to Concordia and taking my first course in CELI, I realized that in a language school, its help is not just simple to help me pass the exam or to enter in a university. It can show me how to become a native English speaker. I believed that this kind of thing is those I could not learn from a university professor.

Although my language learning experience in Canada is quite short, I feel really happy that I can learn in CELI and Concordia.
